Every student who completes the Online Texas License to Carry class is required to undergo the Proficiency Demonstration, which includes range instruction and shooting qualification. This is a mandatory step outlined by the Texas DPS for obtaining your LTC, regardless of the platform through which you take the class. Any certified Texas LTC instructor can conduct the proficiency demonstration.
Unless exempted, such as possessing a military range card dated within the last 10 years, every LTC applicant must fulfill the proficiency demonstration requirement. This typically involves 1-2 hours of range instruction followed by a 50-round shooting qualification. The specifics of the range instruction and its administration vary among LTC instructors. Some may offer private sessions, while others incorporate it into the latter portion of a standard LTC class.
Upon completing the online LTC class and receiving the LTC-101 certificate, three sections require signatures from an instructor: Part A (Classroom Instruction), Part B (Range Instruction), and Part C (Proficiency Demonstration). The online course provider, like TexasGunLicense.net, usually signs and completes Part A, while the LTC instructor oversees Parts B and C during the shooting qualification.
Â
The shooting qualification serves as a test for you to show basic handgun proficiency. It doesn’t require expert marksmanship but rather you demonstrate proper gun handling and safety to the LTC instructor. This is not the time to learn gun safety or how to shoot.
A B27 target, measuring 24 inches wide and 45 inches high, will be used. To pass, each applicant must achieve a score of 70% or higher, which is equal to 175 points out of a possible 250 points. The target features multiple rings for scoring: hits within the 8 ring earn 5 points, within the 7 ring score 4 points, and hits outside the 7 ring but still within the body region are awarded 3 points.
